An Innovative Elementary Education Program in Elko, NV
Our Learner Driven Community puts children at the center of their learning, allowing them to create and maintain personal goals and relational covenants where “Learning to Do” and “Learning to Be” are even more important than “Learning to Know.”
At Acton of the Rubies, children focus on developing ESTEAM. (Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture & Arts, Math) skills. through experiential learning, quests and enrichment activities.
Socratic Discussions and self paced challenges equip children to be independent lifelong learners.
We use the latest in educational technology in a purposeful, meaningful way, allowing students to learn at their own ability level and at their own pace.
Hands-on Quests for Science, Entrepreneurship and the Arts prepare children for Apprenticeships and real world challenges.
Children become empowered learners through a democratic environment in which they have choice and voice in the learning process.
Acton of the Rubies is here to provide the homeschool community two amazing options, the Learner Driven Studio or the Homeschool Kit. Whichever option is best for your family, be confident your children will experience learning like never before. We operate on a ten month calendar, from September through June.
The Learner Driven Studio is for children ages 7 and up, or those that have completed the Homeschool Kit. It is a one-room studio with 21st century technology using:
The Homeschool Kit/Discovery Studio is for 5-6 year olds. This program is specifically designed for the parents to help lay the foundation for their children’s education and encourage a life-long love of learning. With complete flexibility of schedule this new and innovative approach to homeschooling will equip young heroes to explore their passions and become self directed learners.
The Homeschool Kit includes Montessori style methods and materials for all Core Skills (reading, writing, math, and spelling).
This approach allows for a personalized independent focus on learning as well as access to the exclusive Acton Academy Journey Tracker. The Homeschool Kit provides opportunities for family time, flexibility of schedule, and networking with like-minded families.
Deep learning brings a special sense of joy, but embracing rigor is part of saying ‘yes’ to a Hero’s Journey. Mastery requires commitment, discipline and hard work towards a worthy goal.
Acton of the Rubies students learn in a mixed age studio, bringing the classic one-room schoolhouse into the modern age. Students learn to mentor and be mentored by one another. Our Guides are not lecturers, but act as facilitators of personal growth.

Ajeet is a mother, friend, geologist and winter-loving individual. Born in Oregon and raised in various locations within the state, she grew to appreciate new experiences, places and, particularly, the beauty of the Earth. She spent several years in early-adulthood exploring the life of a skier and rock climber before deciding geology might be a worthwhile venture in college. In 2008 she graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor's degree in Geology, followed by a Master's Degree in Structural Geology in 2011 from the same institution. After spending a couple of years in the metals industry she decided she did not yet understand enough about geology and returned to the University of Nevada, Reno for a Doctorate in Economic Geology. For Ajeet, it is the enjoyment of learning, rather than the paper on the wall that has kept her in formal education for so long. Since becoming a mother in 2013, her focus has shifted from understanding how to learn herself to, "how do I teach my children to learn and be stellar humans who find their calling earlier than their 30's?". It is through this desire that she found Acton of the Rubies and has put her whole heart into helping young people learn how they learn and how to lead themselves on their own Hero's Journey.
Laura lived on both US coasts and in between as a child, then settled into Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate studies in the College of Arts and Science. After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City. Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students.
Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy.
Her greatest hero is her mother who was a Master Teacher. Her wisest mentor is her father who sent her off to college with two words of advice: "Be curious".
Jeff Sandefer lives a dual life as an entrepreneur and a Socratic Guide. As an entrepreneur, he founded his first company at age 16 and went on to found or co-found seven successful businesses.
As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff's students five times voted him the school's Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepeneurship professors in America. Jeff went on to co-found the Acton School of Business, an MBA program perennially ranked by the Princeton Review among the best in the nation. In 2012 The Economist honored him as one of the top fifteen Business School professors in the world.
Jeff is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he served for over twenty years on the school's governing committees. He was a longtime director of the Philanthropy Roundtable and National Review magazine and one of the youngest members ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame.
